Virtual reality cinema in the operating room
With PaneoVR, hospitals can present video content in an adaptive virtual movie theater to help calm and distract patients during surgery and increase acceptance of regional anesthesia procedures.
The project was initiated by Klinikum Lippstadt and supported by wfg Kreis Soest as a regional innovation and transfer initiative. Paneoverse serves as the technology implementation partner, contributing PaneoVR as a tool that can be readily integrated into existing workflows. Its ease of use allows the system to operate without dedicated technical staff on site while also making it possible to tailor content to specific target groups, procedures, or individual needs – with hygienically safe operation supported by remote-control capability.
The virtual movie screen is not static; it automatically aligns with the patient's field of view so that it can remain present and clearly visible even if the patient's position changes during the procedure.
This creates an immersive protected retreat that patients can enter safely. In procedures where regional or local anesthesia is medically appropriate, PaneoVR may help reduce tension, uncertainty, and patients' immediate awareness of the surgical setting. The system can therefore support a more pleasant patient experience and may, over time, increase acceptance of less burdensome anesthesia approaches.
Evaluated and ready for the next step
Over a period of approximately six months, the concept was tested in routine operating-room practice at Klinikum Lippstadt with 14 staff members and 17 patients between 31 and 89 years of age. Feedback was positive almost across the board: patients reported a noticeable reduction in anxiety during procedures, which was also reflected in their heart rates. Nearly all respondents indicated strong agreement that they would use the technology again when possible. The pilot experience shows that immersive VR applications are not only technically feasible and usable in the operating room, but can also make a tangible contribution to a more pleasant patient experience.
Hygienic integration into day-to-day operating-room procedures was also tested in practice. As part of a microbiological environmental assessment of the VR headset used in the anesthesia area, samples were taken from the head strap and interior, among other areas. The result: no microbial growth; the samples raised no concerns from a microbiological perspective. This provides initial robust practical evidence that VR technology can be used hygienically in the operating room when appropriately reprocessed and integrated into clinical workflows.
