The VDI TecMobil
TecMobil is an innovative converted double-decker bus (Volvo UNVI B9TL) that travels throughout Baden‑Württemberg as a mobile makerspace.
Equipped with high-tech equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, 3D scanners, a vacuum-forming machine, and cutting plotters, it brings hands-on workshops directly to schools, youth centers, trade shows, and public spaces.
Its goal is to spark interest in STEM on site, build an understanding of technology, and foster participants' self-efficacy and social inclusion. Schools in Baden‑Württemberg can book TecMobil free of charge (materials cost 15 €/participant), with additional travel costs outside BW.
About the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure
Under the umbrella of the “Jugend und Technik” initiative, the VDI supports the next generation of engineers with the goal of inspiring children and young people to engage with STEM subjects. Through numerous regional programs – including competitions, workshops, and clubs – the VDI works to foster curiosity and technical skills
PaneoVR brings TecMobil into the digital world
Hands-on technology – now also immersive: The VDI TecMobil, the mobile makerspace packed with high tech and creativity, can now also be experienced digitally in 360° with PaneoVR. In an interactive virtual recreation of the real double-decker bus, users can immerse themselves in the world of technology – conveniently using a PC, tablet, smartphone, or VR headset. The VDI team recreated TecMobil entirely on its own , making it even more accessible .
The digital tour offers more than just a view of the bus:
At various stations throughout the bus, visitors can explore experiments,, experience technical processes interactively, and access engaging background information . Whether it is 3D printing, laser cutting, or vacuum forming – the digital version clearly explains the equipment and how it works and supplements the explanations with practical tasks.
This immersive experience opens up new avenues for STEM education – especially for people who cannot visit TecMobil in person, or for preparing for and following up on in-person workshops. The virtual TecMobil fosters curiosity, technical understanding, and self-efficacy – just like its real-world counterpart.
